Stanford Online

Stanford Online is a distance-education initiative created by Stanford University to help learners expand their knowledge and develop their careers. It offers individual, free online courses that anyone can sign up for, as well as more specialized education programs that have admission requirements and tuition costs.

The courses and educational programs are developed by Stanford professors and learning specialists in various units of the university, including the Law School, the Graduate School of Business, the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, and the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Stanford Online presents some courses on its own platform, but many are housed on other platforms like Coursera and edX. Recorded lectures and other open learning opportunities are also available on Stanford on iTunes, Stanford on YouTube, and Stanford eCorner.

In response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, Stanford Online has increased the number of free courses it offers as a way of supporting communities affected by the Covid-19 crisis globally.

Types of Courses and Programs:

Stanford Online has several learning options, including individual courses, professional education programs, graduate-level courses and master’s degrees. Learners can obtain credentials ranging from a certificate of participation to a Stanford University degree.

How Does it Work?

Individual Courses: Students may enroll in more than 100 individual courses on various tracks, including courses for personal enrichment and courses for academic credit or other credentials.

Professional Education: Courses and programs on this track are designed to improve students’ career knowledge and skills in various disciplines. Many of the courses are open to everyone, though some require students to submit a short application to ensure  their capability to succeed. Course materials include video lectures, assignments and exams, and a teaching team assistant is available. Course completers can earn a certificate and may be eligible for continuing education credits.

Graduate Education: This track is designed to enhance students’ technical competencies so they can advance in their profession or prepare for advanced study. Up to 18 units of coursework can be counted toward a graduate degree. Students must submit an application before enrolling. Courses may be recorded or given in real time, and instructors keep virtual office hours so students can chat with them in video conferences to get answers and clarifications. The average course work per week is 8 to 10 hours.  Students get letter grades in the courses and are eligible for a Graduate Education certificate if they pass all required courses within three academic years.

Master’s Degrees: Stanford Online allows students to earn a master’s degree on a full- or part-time basis, either completely online or through a combination of online and on-campus courses. Students have up to five years to complete the 45 units required to earn the degree. Those who hold a Graduate Education certificate or have passed graduate coursework can transfer up to 18 credits toward their degree. As in the Graduate Education program, courses may be recorded or given in real time, and students have opportunities to video conference with instructors.

Students may currently enroll in about a dozen Master of Science degree programs in areas like aeronautics, computer science, civil and environmental engineering, and statistics.

Costs and Financial Aid:

More than 60 courses are currently offered free of charge, though some charge a fee if students want to earn a certificate. Other courses generally charge tuition plus a  one-time $75 document fee.

Professional Education:  Tuition varies by the course but typically ranges from $495 to $995, plus the one-time document fee. Students enrolling under this option get access to the course for 60 days. Other enrollment options offer access for one year, and group discounts are available.

Graduate Education: Tuition is $1,300 per unit, and courses vary from 3 to 5 units. Students are also required to pay a one-time fee of $125, which grants lifetime access to their course transcripts.

Master’s Degrees: Tuition is $1,352 per unit, and courses vary from 3 to 5 units. A complete degree requires 45 units. Students are also required to pay the onetime $125 fee for lifetime access to transcripts, plus additional student fees for each quarter they are enrolled.

Students in the Graduate Education and Master’s Degree programs can apply for financial aid through Stanford University. Military tuition benefits are also applicable.

Ease of Use of the Platform and Visual Style:

Stanford Online platform is a user-friendly website. Program enrollment, policies, tuition fees and admissions information is easy to find. Site users can search the course catalog by topic and through various filtering criteria, including credentials offered, the school or partner presenting the course, enrollment availability, delivery option (at Stanford, at a workplace, or online), and free vs. paid.

Academic Disciplines and Subjects Included:
