The British University in Egypt (BUE) is a private Egyptian University located in Al Shorouk City,
Cairo, Egypt. Established in 2004, through an inter-governmental agreement, the University
provides a British style education and awards dual degrees validated by its partner UK
universities and the Egyptian Supreme Council of Universities.

History
It all started in 1998 with an ambitious Memorandum of Understanding between the UK and
the Egyptian Governments, to establish a British University to graduate students with UK
standards for key sectors of the Egyptian economy. The University is supported by a high profile
and an influential Board of Trustees compromising individuals from UK and Egyptian
businesses, public and educational sectors. The academic staff consisted of highly qualified
British, Egyptian and international academics experienced in the British system of Higher
Education.

Academic UK Partners
The British University in Egypt is validated by London South Bank University (LSBU), Queen
Margret University (QMU) and recently Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). LSBU is a
cosmopolitan university with over 18,000 students from over 130 countries. Since 1892, LSBU
has provided vocationally relevant, accredited and professionally recognised education.
In addition, the British University in Egypt has partnered with Queen Margaret University
(QMU) since 2007. The mission and educational philosophy of the University are closely aligned
with those of QMU with the emphasis on the delivery of higher-quality education, widening
participation, and student-focused learning. This educational philosophy is in line with the
norms and standards of the Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt and the Quality Assurance
Agency in the United Kingdom.

In October 2022, The British University in Egypt has announced its new academic partner,
Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). The British University in Egypt, in partnership with
(MMU), offers dual degrees in four programmes at the Faculty of Arts and Design at the British
University in Egypt; namely: Fine Arts & Mixed Media (FAM), Interior Architecture, Fashion
Design and Photography.

The Board of Trustees
The British University in Egypt is governed by a Board of Trustees comprising eminent public
figures from Egypt and the UK.

Ms. Farida Mohamed Farid Khamis is the Chair of the Board of Trustees and Professor
Mohamed Loutfi is the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University. The Chancellor of the
University is the renowned heart surgeon, Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub.

Among the distinguished Board of Trustees are famed diplomats:

  • H.E. Ambassador Amre Moussa, the Foreign Minister of Egypt and Former Secretary General of the Arab League
  • H.E. Professor Dr. Mostafa M. El Feki, Former Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina
  • Professor Farouk El-Baz, Director of the Center for Sensing at Boston University
  • H.E. Ambassador James Moran, the Former EU’s Ambassador to Egypt
  • the Rt. Hon. Charles Clarke, the Former Home Secretary of the United Kingdom
  • the Rt. Hon. Baroness Pauline Perry of Southwark, Former member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom, amongst several other renowned figures.

The Board of Trustees approves the University’s strategy and bylaws, which govern the
University’s operations. The bylaws also set out a committee structure for the day-to-day
leadership and management of the University. The Board meets twice a year and oversees the
strategic direction of the University.

The President and Vice-Chancellor of The British University in Egypt
Professor Mohamed Loutfi is the President and Vice-Chancellor of the British University in
Egypt.

Professor Loutfi was born in Alexandria and holds a BSc in Economics and Political Science and
an MSc in Information Technology from Alexandria University. He also spent time studying
System Dynamics at the University of Bergen, Norway before attaining his PhD in Systems.
Thinking from the University of Sunderland, UK, his passion for blending innovation and
systems led to his research in Modelling and Simulation of Social Systems, and Non-linear,
Dynamic Feedback Systems.

Professor Loutfi is also a leader in international partnerships and cooperation, initiating and
coordinating high level partnerships in over 25 different countries, some at governmental level,
with projects including enhancing institutional cooperation in learning, teaching and enterprise,
as well as internationalisation strategies.

Professor Loutfi, a renowned Professor of Internationalisation from Cardiff Metropolitan
University, UK, is also a visiting Professor of Innovation and Globalisation at Eurasia University,
China, and has extensive experience in universities’ leadership and management. His expertise
has led him to initiate many “firsts” in the field of higher education. He was the first
British/Egyptian academician to be a council member at the Observatory of Magna Charta Universitatum of Fundamental University Values and Rights in Bologna, and the first professional in Europe to take part in a global education think tank, set up by the Ministry of Education in China to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and start up education.

He is also the Founder and Vice President of the Board of the Arab European Leadership Network in
Higher Education (ARELEN) and was heavily involved with the Leadership Foundation for Higher
Education as an International Associate and member of the reference group for the Global
Leadership Programme for Higher Education.

University Ranking
The British University in Egypt appears for the first time on the 2023 Times Higher Education
World University Rankings, ranking 1st among private universities, accredited by the Supreme
Council of Universities. Only 26 Egyptian universities are listed on this year’s rankings, which
evaluate universities based on their research, citations, teaching, and international outlook.

The British University in Egypt ranked First among Egyptian Universities in the Subject Ranking
(Physics) 2022-2023 Indicator Rankings on the US News Ranking of Best Global Universities. In
addition, the British University in Egypt also ranked Fifth among African Universities.

Additionally, it is the only Egyptian university to appear on the 2022 Shanghai Ranking’s Global
Ranking of Academic Subjects in the field of Physics ranking first in Egypt, and fifth among
African Universities. For the past six years, the British University in Egypt has topped both
private and national universities in Egypt on the Physics ranking, and the 2022 results
consolidate our status as a catalyst for education and scientific research in the region.

In addition, the British University in Egypt is ranked first among the Accredited Private
Universities according to the Centre for World Universities Rankings (CWUR) for 2021 – 2022.
The British University in Egypt has won first place in the field of physics according to Shanghai
Ranking Consultancy of Academic Rankings of the world Universities (ARWU) 2023, among 500
Universities of the world, outclassing all the Egyptian Government and Private Universities. This
is considered a confirmation of the University’s mission in the field of scientific research.

Scientific research
The British University in Egypt has gained recognition in research and postgraduate education,
both in Egypt and abroad. The multidisciplinary master’s programmes offered in advanced
technology areas, such as renewable energy, advanced materials, sustainability, and web
science, are among the first to start in Egypt. These programmes are supported by advanced
research in many thrust areas, which attract external funding and result in publications in top
peer reviewed journals. Additionally, The British University in Egypt research activities have
opened strong collaborations with international universities and research centres, as well as
with the industry in Egypt. The latter, for example, have resulted in joint ventures in new
technologies, such as wind and solar energy.

The British University in Egypt has the highest number of researchers among private
universities on the World’s Top 2% most-cited scientists list, released recently by Stanford
University, USA. Our top-cited researchers namely, have produced groundbreaking research
and published their findings in diverse fields.


Undergraduate Programmes

The British University in Egypt has 11 faculties:

Undergraduate Scholarships
The British University in Egypt offers various scholarships based on specific criteria as accepted
students with scholarships must also note the following items: an applicant who qualifies for
more than one scholarship will be awarded whichever scholarship is the highest. The British
University in Egypt is highly cooperative in reducing the financial burden for the students and
their parents. It offers more than 30 different types of scholarships (partial and full).
Types of scholarships the University offers:

1- Merit-based scholarships:
Scholarships can be academic, sportive, (schools-clubs-entities and syndicates)
collaborations. As tuition fees vary from one program to another, it’s more rewarding to set
the scholarships as a percentage of tuition fees. The University rewards the best achievers
for every achievement they fulfill to encourage high academic performance, therefore the
academic scholarships are on a yearly basis.

2- Athletic scholarships:
The British university in Egypt offers three levels of athletic scholarships; (international,
national, Egyptian & Arab universities level), they are considered as others merit-based
scholarships and offered as a percentage of tuition up to 80%, earned on yearly basis.

3- Number of yearly scholarships for current students:

More than 60% of our students have fulfilled their eligibility for partial and full scholarships.
Students can be given more than one scholarship according to his eligibility based on the
financial regulations up to 40%. All scholarships are given on the condition that the student
successfully progresses.

Student Life
The British University in Egypt has a distinguished student life that is unprecedented in Egyptian
universities, it opens a vast number of activities covering all the interests of students, as it is
concerned with the quality of students’ life. There are more than 30 students’ organizations
and clubs with different interests for students to join.

Serving the Community
Regarding community service, the University has developed a sustainable strategic plan for
community activities, and on top of them is support for the goals of the Climate Summit in
Egypt COP27, and the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda aligning with
Egypt’s vision 2030, with the participation of presidents and leaders of the world, to achieve the
goals of sustainable development.

The British University in Egypt launched two projects for of climate. The first project was a themed marathon, to raise climate action awareness, and it turned into the largest thematic run in Egypt’s history with over 10 thousand runners. The second one was a Climate Summit Simulation Model – COP27 SIMULATION – which was co-opened by Minister Gillian Keegan, UK Secretary of State for Education, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme, and with the participation of 130 students from 24 countries around the world. It was organized under the auspices of the Ministries of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Youth and Sports in Egypt, and H.E. Professor Mahmoud
Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt.

The participation of the British University in the actual Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh was with ten sessions, to culminate these efforts. During the conference, the University was able to present the results of the recommendations of the conclusion of the Simulation Model activities and include it in the
global youth statement.

The British University in Egypt was also the first University to sign a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Egyptian Presidential initiative for, “Haya Karima” with the aim of
exchanging experiences in joint projects to serve and develop society, and to promote the
University involvement in the field of community service, by investing in human cadres in
villages and achieving and settling sustainable development goals. In addition, a Haya Karima
academic working group was formed on campus comprising to top young academics from the
University, to help strategise achieving the goals of the Haya Karima initiative.

The University also launched several medical convoys to the various governorates of Egypt like Fayoum,
Gharbia, Monofeya and Sharkeya, to perform medical examinations and free treatment for
citizens.
