EdX

EdX is a nonprofit organization founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University in 2012. It offers more than 3,000 online courses in dozens of subjects that are provided by more than 140 universities and corporations. Students can view most edX courses free by enrolling as an auditor, but if they want access to graded assignments and to obtain a verified course-completion certificate, they’ll have to pay a fee.

Besides individual courses, Edx offers complete online degrees and modules that are parts of degrees, which students can take for academic credit. It also offers professional skills courses that lead to a certificate. All of these options have tuition costs.

Like Coursera and FutureLearn, EdX has recently expanded free access in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. It has launched a Remote Access Program that gives students at participating universities free access to courses and programs from all edX partners, not just those of their own universities.

“We established the program with a simple goal: harness the power of our network and our online learning platform to help universities help students impacted by the pandemic,” Anant Agarwal, edX’s founder and chief executive, said in a blog post.

Types of Courses and Programs:

Besides individual courses, different credentials and programs offered by edX include:

MicroBachelors: With costs starting at around $166 per credit, this program allows students to earn undergraduate credits with partner universities and prepares them for jobs. In some cases, companies may cover the cost for eligible employees.

MicroMasters: This program offers a series of graduate-level courses in different subjects which help advance skills and knowledge. Students can apply to the university offering credit for the MicroMaster’s program, and if accepted, they can enroll in the university course with less time and cost.

Professional Certificate: Designed by industry leaders and universities, these are series of courses meant to provide the professional skills needed in high-demand fields of work. Certificate programs typically cost about $400, but a glance at programs currently offered revealed prices ranging from less than $100 to more than $800. The offerings are heavily weighted toward business and technology, with a few outliers such as sustainable tourism and fashion design.

Global Freshman Academy: This program allows students to enroll in courses provided by Arizona State University and earn credits that can be applied toward degrees at Arizona State or transferred to another university that is willing to accept the credits. Anyone can start taking the courses without applying and students only have to pay if they pass the courses.

Online Master’s degrees: These are online graduate degrees offered by universities that edX says have the same academic rigor as campus-based programs but that have lower costs than than those programs. Master’s degree programs currently offered on edX range in price from $10,000 to $25,000.

Xseries: These are series of courses designed to help students master a specific skill or field of knowledge. Students can receive an XSeries Certificate by enrolling in the verified certificate track in each of the courses in the series. The prices can vary across courses and specific XSeries.

How Does it Work?

Similar to Coursera and FutureLearn, students have the option to audit a course free, or upgrade to get extra features like graded assignments and a verified certificate of completion.

Costs and Financial Aid:

The cost of EdX courses with verified certificates varies, ranging from about $50 to $300. Students who cannot afford to pay may apply for financial assistance after enrolling in the course on the audit track and may be eligible for a 90 percent discount on the cost of upgrading to the certificate track.

Professional education courses and some MicroMasters program courses are not eligible for financial assistance. For online master’s degrees, financial aid is determined by the partner university.

Ease of Use of the Platform and Visual Style:

EdX has a user-friendly website with uncomplicated features and options. Technical support is available to deal with students’ problems. Smart devices’ apps are available and can be used to do most of the course tasks.

Academic Disciplines and Subjects Included:

Architecture, art and culture, biology and life sciences, business and management, chemistry, communication, computer science, data analysis and statistics, design, economics and finance, education and teacher training, electronics, energy and earth sciences, engineering, environmental studies, ethics, food and nutrition, health and safety, history, humanities, language, law, literature, math, medicine, music, philanthropy, philosophy and ethics, physics, science and social sciences.
