UNIMED and International Organization for Migration Agree on Closer Cooperation

The International Organization for Migration, a United Nations’ organisation, and the nonprofit Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED) have made their long-standing cooperation official.

The two organisations, which have already worked together on many projects, signed a memorandum of understanding in IOM’s Rome offices on May 25. Among the synergies between IOM and UNIMED, IOM will support the activities of an Erasmus+ project in Libya by giving visibility to information of common interest and sharing its expertise and participation in relevant events.

Laurence Hart, director of the IOM’s Coordination Office for the Mediterranean, and UNIMED’s newly elected president Kherieh Rassas signed the memorandum. It focuses on cooperation in education, youth employability, technical cooperation, research and data collection.

The International Organization for Migration was created in 1951 to help governments cope with the 11 million refugees caused by World War II. It has since had to turn its attention to other wars and causes of displacement. Its headquarters are in Geneva. The organisation is committed to the principle that orderly and human migration benefits migrants and society.

Founded in 1991, the Mediterranean Universities Union is based in Rome. It promotes academic cooperation among more than 150 member universities in 25 countries in the Euro-Mediterranean region, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Western Balkans.
