This European Research Council award offers one studentship to an academically outstanding candidate who is intending to enroll in a Ph.D. program in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland.
The studentship will be funded by the European Research Council and will cover U.K. or international level of tuition fees, depending on the applicant’s status, plus an annual stipend of £15,285. The studentship will be awarded for a maximum of three years of study and a fourth year for writing up, subject to satisfactory annual progress.

Eligibility:
– The award is open to U.K. and overseas students commencing a Ph.D. degree in the academic year 2021-2022.
– It is imperative that the candidate has previously studied Classical Arabic at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Candidates will select a topic of Abbasid fiscal history for their dissertation, based on the study of published papyrus documents written in Arabic dating to the 8th-10th century CE.
– Only applications to year one of the Ph.D. program of study will be considered.
