Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), in Beppu, Japan, invites applications from international students who wish to conduct graduate studies (master’s or doctoral) at APU as research scholars under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Program

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) provides this scholarship with the aim of enhancing the international competitiveness of and promoting the active exchange of international students in Japanese universities. 

To be considered for this scholarship at APU, applicants must first apply to the university. APU will then select eligible candidates to recommend to the scholarship program.


The scholarship benefits include:

         -100% of tuition (covered by the APU Tuition Reduction Scholarship)

         -A stipend of 144,000 JPY (about $1,300 US) per month for living expenses (amount subject to change)

         – Economy class air travel between the home country and APU at the beginning and end of the program


Deadline: August 16, 2020



      -Intend to study abroad in Japan from overseas

      -Not have Japanese nationality and be a national of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan

      -Be born on or after April 2, 1986


How to Apply

      -Submit the APU application by August 16. Additional documents are not required to be considered for this scholarship.

      -APU reviews application documents and selects outstanding candidates to recommend to “MEXT”.

      -Applicants selected to be recommended for this scholarship are notified with their final APU application results.

      -Selected applicants complete and submit additional “MEXT” (SGU) application documents to APU.

       -The final scholarship award results are decided by “MEXT”.

       -Note: The application process and schedule differs according to the country of the applicant’s nationality. Applicants should contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in their country for details. A list of websites of Japanese Embassies and Consulates General is available here.
