Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships in Germany

The Heinrich Böll Foundation is now accepting applications for Undergraduate, Master’s Degree and Ph.D. Scholarships in Germany for studies beginning in the Fall of 2023.

The scholarships cover different levels of funding for different groups of students.

Undergraduate and Master’s Degree Scholarships Benefits:

– German students and foreign students educated in Germany: up to €812 plus €300 study costs allowance per month; possibly plus family, childcare, health insurance or similar allowances.

– EU nationals not educated in Germany: up to €812 plus €300 study costs allowance per month; possibly plus family, childcare, health insurance or similar allowances.

– Non-EU nationals not educated in Germany: Non-EU nationals not educated in Germany: €934 per month plus various individual allowances, possibly health insurance or similar.

Doctoral Degree Scholarships Benefits:

– German students and foreign students educated in Germany: €1,350 per month basic scholarship, plus €100 per month research costs allowance.

– EU nationals not educated in Germany: €1,350 per month basic scholarship, plus €100 per month research costs allowance.

– Non-EU nationals not educated in Germany: €1,200 per month, plus € 100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances.

Deadline: March 1, 2023

Eligibility

Applicants will first have to apply and be selected in a German or German-recognized university and then apply for this scholarship. 

Undergraduate and Master’s Degree Scholarships criteria:

– Germans and foreign students educated in Germany can apply for this scholarship only for their first degree, i.e. a Bachelor’s degree.

– EU nationals and other foreign students not educated in Germany can apply for this scholarship for a Master’s degree only.

– Applicants not educated in Germany must also provide proof of proficiency in the German language, Level B2 or DSH 2 (with certificate).

Doctoral Degree Scholarships Criteria:

– All doctoral candidates must provide proof that they have been accepted into a doctoral-level programme at a German or state-recognized university.

– Applicants not educated in Germany must also provide proof of proficiency in the German language, Level B2 or DSH 2 (with certificate).

How to Apply

We accept only online applications. Please follow the steps outlined below.

– Gather information on the application process and the requested documents (see the note below).

– Register for the Online Application Portal. (The portal will open six weeks before the scholarship deadline (starting in mid-January).

– Provide the requested information in the Online Application Portal.

– After uploading all of your documents, submit your application before the end of the application deadline.
