Harvard Kennedy School Fellowships

Description

The Middle East Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs offers one-year fellowships for researchers at the pre-doctoral, postdoctoral and junior faculty level for research related to Middle Eastern governance and public policy.

The fellowships are for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Priority will be given to applications pursuing one of these six primary areas of focus: (1) improving governance; (2) building peace; (3) revitalizing the state; (4) broadening financial and labor markets; (5) governing technology; or (6) adapting to environmental challenges.

The Middle East Initiative Research Fellowship Program is part of the Emirates Leadership Initiative. It offers ten-month stipends of $50,000 to pre-doctoral fellows, $65,000 to postdoctoral fellows, and $75,000 to fellows who received their Ph.D.’s more than five years prior to their fellowship start date.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply to other sources of funding. All applicants should clearly indicate on their application form whether they are seeking full or partial funding, and indicate other potential funding sources.

Non-stipendiary appointments are also offered, but the application process remains the same.

Deadline

The application period for the 2023-2024 academic year will open on October 3, 2022, and close on December 1, 2022.

Eligibility

– Eligible candidates include advanced doctoral candidates, recent recipients of a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, and untenured faculty members.

– Applicants for pre-doctoral fellowships must have passed general examinations, advanced to candidacy, received dissertation prospectus approval, and concluded all necessary fieldwork for the dissertation by the time of application. The strong expectation is that predoctoral fellows will defend their dissertations at the end of their residency.

– Applicants for postdoctoral fellowships: Applicants who expect to complete their Ph.D. program prior to the fellowship can apply for a postdoctoral appointment, noting that postdoctoral fellowship offers are contingent upon submitting proof of Ph.D. completion prior to the September 1st fellowship start date.

– Applications from political scientists, sociologists, economists, historians, and other social scientists are welcome.

– Applications from women, minorities, and citizens of all countries are also encouraged.

How to apply

Eligible candidates must submit their applications online through the Belfer Center’s Fellowships page, at this link. The application window will open on October 3, 2022.
