MIT OpenCourseWare

MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) is an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that aims to make high-quality courses from across the university available free to anyone anywhere. More than 2,000 courses at levels ranging from undergraduate to graduate research are available. However, the platform does not award any credit for completing the courses.

How Does it Work?

Each course has an introduction describing the main topics covered within it and suggestions about who might find it helpful or of interest. Many include recordings of the course lectures as they were given during a particular semester, along with notes, learning activities, essays, tests and other forms of assignments.  Some also include textbooks and faculty teaching insights.

Users are not required to sign up for an account, and there are no enrolling or due dates. Instead, there are links to download the learning materials and instructions, so students can learn at their own pace. Users can search within the platform by topic, by specific course numbers, by schools and departments within MIT, and by type of teaching materials, such as audio/video courses, online textbooks, and instructor insights.

Costs and Financial Aid:

The platform is open access and completely free.

Ease of Use of the Platform and Visual Style:

The layout of the website is fairly simple with pull-down menus for finding courses, for finding materials of interest to educators, and for donating money to support the OCW initiative. There are also links to tools explaining how to  use the platform and to a feature called “Chalk Radio,” which has podcasts by professors about teaching at MIT.

Academic Disciplines and Subjects Included:

Business, energy, engineering, fine arts, health and medicine, humanities, mathematics, science, social science, society, and teaching and education.
