Edraak is a nonprofit learning platform that provides free online courses in Arabic. Launched in 2014 as an initiative of the Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development, in Jordan, Edraak has worked in partnership with the Harvard-MIT consortium edX and seeks to make quality education in Arabic accessible to anyone with an Internet connection.

Edraak offers courses on two platforms: Continuous Learning, for adults, and K–12 Education, with resources for teachers, parents and school-age learners. Courses on the K-12 platform are designed to align with curricula across the Middle East and North Africa region.

Types of Courses and Programs:

Continuous Learning: This section offers short individual courses as well as sequences of courses in specialized topics. The courses are primarily on job-related, self-development and other practical topics rather than academic subjects. Through its partnership with edX, Edraak will also allow access in Arabic to courses created by top universities in edX’s network.  A certificate of completion is provided by Edraak upon completion of the course or specialization.

K–12 Education: This section contains free online resources for parents and teachers, and video lessons for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

How Does it Work?

Instruction is mainly through recorded videos, though courses might also have some interactive learning tools, such as forums that allow interaction and sharing thoughts and knowledge between the students and the course providers.

Costs and Financial Aid:

All courses at Edraak are free.

Ease of Use of the Platform and Visual Style:

Both the website and the mobile application are user-friendly. The courses range from three to six weeks, divided into week-long segments composed of several videos with quizzes and assignments at the end of the week. The layout of the website as well as the app is simple and straightforward.

Academic Disciplines and Subjects Included:

Architecture, Business and Management, Creative Arts and Media, Economics and Finance, Education and Teacher Training, Health, Health and Safety, Humanities, Language Learning, Literature, Science, and Technology
