Executive Director at Al-Fanar Media 

The Alexandria Trust, which is a U.K. charity that works to promote world class education in the Arab region, is seeking to appoint a Director for it’s flagship programme Al-Fanar Media (AFM), which is a bilingual (Arabic-English), online publication that covers news about education, arts and culture in the Arab region. The Director will report to the Alexandria Trust’s Board of Trustees and is responsible for carrying out the organisations strategic plans and policies on their behalf.

The Director of Al-Fanar Media will manage communications, fundraising, publishing and the general operational and financial management functions of AFM. The Editor of AFM will also report to The Director. 

Key Responsibilities 

Work with the Board of Trustees to craft strategic vision, mission, annual goals and objectives. 

Represent the organisation and serve as its public face as appropriate. 

Ensure administrative procedures and processes are followed to maintain fiscal accountability, control and efficiency of operations. 

Responsible for managing and recruiting non-editorial staff for AFM and establishing systems and procedures to ensure productivity and cooperative working relationships with all AFM staff. 

Maintain excellent relationships with current donors and expand the donor base. 

Build the profile of Al-Fanar Media with donors, foundations, businesses, educational institutions, students in the Arab world and general supporters. 

Work with other members of the team to increase revenue streams from donors, sponsorship and publishing products. 

Writing grant proposals, meeting potential sponsors and developing relationships will be part of this. Identify new partnerships with a view to increasing content and revenue streams. 

Ensure that all grant obligations are met or exceeded and narrative and financial reports are submitted in a timely manner. 

Work with the editorial team to ensure that AFM maintains the highest editorial standards and meets the needs of its beneficiaries (primarily universities, faculty and students in the Arab world). 

Work with the editorial and communications teams to ensure that AFM has the widest possible reach. 

Work with the editorial and communications teams to develop new products with a view to attracting donors and income streams. 

Ensure compliance with The Charity Commission’s rules and obligations and any other regulatory body that The Alexandria Trust or AFM needs to comply with. 

Maintain a close working relationship with the Board of Trustees and keep them informed via timely reports and quarterly board meetings. 

Requirements 

  • University degree from an accredited college or university 
  • A minimum of five years experience in the charitable or educational sector 
  • A track record in raising funds and working with donors 
  • Knowledge of the media and publishing sectors 
  • Knowledge in the area of higher education (preferably in the Arab world) 
  • Arab language and knowledge of the region would be an advantage

Head of Fundraising at Al-Fanar Media 

The Alexandria Trust, a UK charity that works to promote world class education in the Arab world is seeking to appoint a Head of Fundraising for Al-Fanar Media. The Head of Fundraising will provide leadership in all aspects of fundraising, sponsorship, publishing revenue streams and other revenue generating projects. Reporting to The Director, work will initially be focused on Al-Fanar Media (AFM), a bilingual (Arabic-English) online publication that covers news about education, research and culture in the Arab region. This is a key role within the Alexandria Trust to support the ambitious growth strategy of AFM and other potential projects.

Key Responsibilities 

Delivering fundraising targets from high net-worth individuals, companies, foundations, trusts, governments and other institutional donor organisations.

Research and deliver a strategy for all forms of fundraising for the Alexandria Trust and AFM. 

Maximise opportunities for fundraising with individual donors, foundations, trusts and institutional donor organisations who have the potential to generate income for the Trust. 

Identify and develop publishing products that will generate income for AFM. 

Identify new partnerships with a view to increasing content and revenue streams. 

Lead the writing of grant proposals while ensuring that expertise from key team members is included and encouraged. 

Work closely with the Director and accountant to ensure that all proposals meet the commercial and budgetary requirements of The Alexandria Trust and AFM. 

Work with the Director to ensure compliance with The Charity Commission’s rules and obligations and any other regulatory body that The Alexandria Trust or AFM needs to comply with. 

Work closely with the Editor of AFM and the editorial team to develop strong project proposals that enhance the editorial product and further the editorial aims of AFM. All proposals involving editorial must adhere to AFM’s editorial standards and independence. 

Work with the Director and the Editor to maintain strong relationships with current donors and new relationships with potential donors. 

Embed a culture of business development within the organisation. 

Work with the Director and Editor to ensure that all obligations to donors are met and all reports are submitted in a timely manner. 

Requirements 

  • University degree from an accredited college or university 
  • Exemplary communication, presentation and leadership skills 
  • Excellent organisational abilities and attention to detail 
  • Fundraising experience with a track record of meeting or exceeding ambitious targets. 
  • Experience in writing complex grant proposals. 
  • Expert knowledge of fundraising laws and practice 
  • Expertise in fundraising for education and/or media development projects with strong contacts. 
  • Familiarity with institutional donors such as the FCO, USAID, SIDA, UN organisations would be an advantage. 
  • Familiarity with raising funds from high net worth individuals (HNWI). 
  • Strong contacts and knowledge of the current donor landscape particularly in Europe, North America and the Arab world. 
  • Arabic language and knowledge of the region would be an advantage.

Al Fanar Media is looking for an enthusiastic staff writer to join our editorial team. The staff writer will work closely with the editor, managing editor and freelancers.

As a staff writer, you should be able to perform thorough research on various topics related mainly to education and have a keen eye for detail.

Ultimately, you should be able to deliver good quality content, meet strict deadlines and work well under pressure.

This is a remote full-time job and available immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting research on assigned topics.
  • Interviewing individuals relevant to the article.
  • Analyze and interpret findings by breaking down data
  • Uncover newsworthy stories
  • Write content with readers needs in mind and meet deadlines
  • Ensure your pieces are accurate and objective
  • Establish contacts and sources to use in future research
  • Contribute to content idea generation for publication

Requirements

  • Proven work experience as a staff writer or reporter
  • Demonstrable portfolio of published articles (previous articles on education will be a plus)
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office, digital editing, web search and databases)
  • Fluency and professionalism in Arabic and, ideally, English.
  • Ability to follow strict deadlines and fact-check information
  • Good observation skills
  • BSc degree in journalism, communications, or relevant field
