Arab Universities Are Not Isolated

For many years, higher education experts have called for linking Arab universities with their societies. Now, it seems that this goal has become a reality.

Across the Arab world, several initiatives have been launched to provide specialised platforms and centres to explore the needs of local communities, the industrial sector, and the labour market, to be translated into a series of rehabilitation and training programs. These programs improve the quality of higher education graduates and prepare them to face the challenges of their society, including those that concern our contemporary world, such as climate change.

In this bulletin, you will find more news about higher education institutions’ events, scholarships, endless talks about online learning, and women higher education leaders in the Arab world.

It has been more than 20 years since Rahma Bourqia was appointed head of Hassan II University and became Morocco’s first female university president. A debate continues about why more women are not leading the country’s universities and higher education institutions. In this report, Al-Fanar Media talks to female leaders in Morocco’s academic institutions about their careers and the advice they would give younger female scholars.

Online Learning Opens Opportunities

For many people, getting an education is still a challenge rather than a guaranteed right, says Malake El Haj, director of knowledge and innovation at the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education. This is an area where online learning can make a difference, she argues in a commentary for Al-Fanar Media. The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the abilities of online learning to enhance education, and changed some negative perceptions about distance education in Arab schools and universities. Now institutions must invest in online learning opportunities that meet the needs of all students, El Haj says.

Internships That Lead to Jobs

Besides academic achievement, undergraduate students need internships while at university, as an essential aspect of career development. In this brief guide, Al-Fanar Media reviews the opportunities internships provide to students, such as a variety of practical experience, allowing them to acquire and develop skills, and test their capabilities in various fields, in addition to promising opportunities for employment.
